A Weekend Made for Two: Discovering the Best of Marlborough
Some weekends leave you feeling like you need another weekend to recover.
This isn't one of them.
This is the kind of weekend that reminds you how good it feels to wake slowly, breathe deeply and let the world wait for a little while.
A weekend in Marlborough doesn't have to be packed with plans to be memorable. In fact, we'd argue it's quite the opposite. The best moments are often the ones you never planned at all.
It starts slowly.
The first rays of sunlight spill through the cabin windows while the birds have already begun their morning chorus. There's no alarm clock urging you out of bed, no schedule waiting to be followed. Just the quiet promise of a new day.
Breakfast somehow tastes better when it's eaten outside.
Coffee in hand, you wander to the picnic table overlooking the property. The only sounds are birdsong and the gentle rush of the river nearby. You find yourself sitting a little longer than you intended, watching the light change across the landscape and realising you've completely forgotten where your phone is.
Later, you might wander through the private walking trails, following the old mountain bike tracks that wind their way through the forest. At the top of the hill, the views stretch across the surrounding countryside - a reminder that sometimes the best reward comes simply from slowing your pace.
Eventually, curiosity calls you beyond the gates.
Marlborough is famous around the world for its wine, and exploring a handful of cellar doors is one of life's simple pleasures. Spend the afternoon lingering over tastings at places like Wither Hills, Allan Scott or Saint Clair before settling in for a long lunch where nobody is watching the time.
When you return to Wildwood Estate, the day feels wonderfully unhurried.
Maybe you curl up with the book you've been meaning to finish for months.
Maybe you stretch out in the hammock beneath the trees, gently swaying in the breeze with nothing to do and nowhere else to be.
Maybe you soak up the last warmth of the afternoon sun.
Maybe you simply sit together, saying very little at all.
As evening arrives, dinner becomes part of the experience rather than something to squeeze in. Cook together, pour a glass of local Marlborough wine and watch the sky slowly change colour from the picnic table outside the cabin.
As the last of the daylight fades, run a warm bath and sink into the outdoor tub. Surrounded by nature, with nothing but the sounds of the river and the evening birds, it's a chance to completely switch off.
Before long, the stars appear.
Not just a handful, but thousands of them, turning an ordinary bath into something you'll remember long after you've gone home.
It's the kind of night that reminds you how rarely we stop to look up.
The next morning unfolds much the same way.
Slowly.
Without urgency.
Perhaps you'll head towards the Marlborough Sounds, where winding roads lead to breathtaking coastal views. Or maybe it's Whites Bay, the Emerald Pools at Pelorus, the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre or the Marlborough Farmers' Market that catches your attention.
There's no right answer.
One of the joys of Marlborough is that every season offers something different. Summer invites lazy afternoons by the water, autumn paints the vineyards in rich golds and reds, winter encourages cosy mornings and crisp walks, while spring brings birdsong, fresh green hills and new life across the countryside.
Wherever the weekend takes you, we hope it's never rushed.
Because while Marlborough offers beautiful wineries, incredible food and unforgettable scenery, those aren't the things we hope you'll remember most.
We hope you remember how you felt.
Peaceful.
Relaxed.
Present.
The kind of feeling that's easy to lose in everyday life, but surprisingly easy to find again when you give yourself permission to slow down.
Until next time,
Alan and Melissa
