Marlborough Through the Seasons
People often ask us when the best time is to visit Marlborough.
The truth is, I don't think there is a "best" season.
There are simply four beautiful ones.
Each brings something completely different. A different pace, different colours, different sounds and a different reason to fall in love with this part of New Zealand.
That's one of the things I love most about living here.
No two visits ever feel quite the same.
Spring
There's something incredibly hopeful about spring.
The mornings are still cool enough to remind you winter has only just passed, but the days begin to stretch a little longer and you can feel summer quietly making its way towards us.
The paddocks turn a fresh, vibrant green.
Newborn lambs appear in the fields.
The birds seem to sing just a little louder.
Everything feels alive again.
It's the season that makes you want to throw open the cabin doors, breathe deeply and spend as much time outside as possible.
It's also a wonderful time for walking, cycling and exploring Marlborough before the busy summer season arrives.
Summer
Summer in Marlborough feels effortless.
Long, warm evenings invite you to linger outside long after dinner has finished.
Sunsets seem to last forever.
It's the perfect season for exploring the Marlborough Sounds, visiting local wineries, enjoying outdoor concerts or cooling off with a swim before returning to Wildwood Estate.
As the evening settles in, cook dinner together, eat outside beneath the open sky and finish the day with a soak in the outdoor bath as the stars begin to appear.
There really is something magical about a Marlborough summer evening.
Autumn
Autumn might just be one of Marlborough's best-kept secrets.
The vineyards transform into shades of gold, amber and crimson, creating some of the most picturesque landscapes of the year.
The evenings become cooler.
The days feel calmer.
The end of daylight saving somehow makes life feel a little slower, encouraging cosy evenings and unhurried mornings.
It's a beautiful season for long walks, bike rides and simply enjoying the changing colours around you.
Winter
If I had to choose one season to surprise people, it would be winter.
Most people imagine winter as something to get through.
Here, it's something to experience.
The mornings often begin with a blanket of frost sparkling across the grass.
As the first rays of sunlight reach the ground, tiny crystals catch the light while gentle wisps of steam rise into the crisp morning air. It's one of those quiet moments that makes you stop, even if only for a minute, and simply watch.
The river grows stronger after rain, its familiar sound becoming deeper and more powerful as it winds its way through the property.
Evenings become wonderfully cosy.
Inside, the cabin is warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to curl up with a good book, enjoy a glass of local wine or simply watch the evening settle in. Outside, the winter sky feels impossibly clear.
The stars somehow seem brighter in winter.
Perhaps it's the cold air.
Perhaps it's simply that winter encourages us to slow down enough to notice them.
For me, winter has the most wow moments.
It's quieter.
Calmer.
And somehow even more beautiful than people expect.
So... when is the best time to visit?
Honestly?
Whenever you need it most.
Maybe that's spring, when everything feels fresh and full of possibility.
Maybe it's summer, with its long evenings and endless sunsets.
Maybe it's autumn, when the colours begin to change and life naturally slows.
Or maybe it's winter, when the world feels quieter and nature quietly puts on one of its most spectacular displays.
Whichever season you choose, Marlborough has a way of inviting you to slow down.
To breathe a little deeper.
To notice a little more.
And perhaps that's what makes every season the best one.
Until next time,
Melissa
Come for the quiet. Stay for the stars. Wake with the wild.
